Hydra is an established approach to experiential learning, developed over more than 30 years to help individuals and organisations explore complex decision-making in realistic environments.
Rather than simply presenting information or teaching prescribed responses, Hydra immerses participants in unfolding situations where they must interpret information, manage uncertainty, make decisions and explain their reasoning.
The methodology combines individual and collective experience, structured reflection and facilitated discussion to develop deeper understanding and organisational learning.
Realistic scenarios in a safe learning environment
Each exercise is designed around clearly defined learning objectives and reflects the professional challenges faced by participants. Scenarios develop over time, introducing new information, competing priorities and changing circumstances.
Participants can explore different approaches, challenge assumptions and consider the consequences of their decisions without the risks associated with real-world events.

Syndicate discussions and decision logs
Participants work in small groups, known as syndicates, where they discuss emerging information, consider their options and record decisions together with the reasoning behind them.
These decision logs provide a valuable record of how thinking develops throughout the exercise and form an important basis for subsequent discussion and analysis.
Plenary discussions
At key points, syndicates come together to compare their decisions, examine different interpretations and share their reasoning.
Experienced facilitators and subject matter experts guide these discussions, encouraging critical reflection rather than simply identifying right or wrong answers.
Creating Hydra exercise content
Hydra exercises are developed collaboratively with organisations, combining their professional expertise with our experience in simulation design and facilitation.
Learning objectives are translated into realistic scenarios, ensuring that each exercise reflects the challenges, responsibilities and decisions relevant to those taking part.
Learning from operational and professional experience
The Hydra methodology continues to evolve through operational experience, research and structured debriefing.
Insights from 10kV debriefs and other sources of organisational learning can inform the development of new exercises, allowing lessons from real events to be explored and shared with others.

Flexible delivery environments
The same Hydra methodology can be delivered through permanent Hydra Suites, mobile installations or Hydra Presence, our virtual simulation environment.
Each provides opportunities for realistic decision-making, collaborative learning and facilitated reflection, with the flexibility to meet different organisational requirements.
